CL Yost Harness Shop

Spectacular cabinet card showing the owners of C.L Yost, Harness Shop displaying their high quality product in front of their building. We love the creative arrangement of the stunning furs draped from the second story ledge with a leather horse collar visible directly below. Next to the craftsman of the shop, more furs stacked on a humpback trunk and a blanket is draped on the right side of the building. On the left side, another beautiful patterned blanket and a US flag hang on the building. More furs and blankets are in the display windows along with a hitching device for a wagon hanging from the ceiling.  While not photographer identified, there is a note on back that places this shop in Yipsilanti, MI. We found a fascinating article confirming this in the February 3, 1860 Michigan Argus that details a fire that broke out at the “Daguerreian Gallery of A.J. Clark on the s/s of E. Cross Street, which resulted in the destruction of six wooden buildings. The building in which the fire originated was owned by B. Follett; loss $2,500 – no insurance. The building was occupied by C.L. Yost, Harness Shop who saved most of his goods – loss $100; and by J.M. Crane, Drug and Variety Store, who lost everything - $800 – and no insurance.” The article continues with the other buildings and owners who shops were destroyed. According to Craig’s Registry, Clark did work on Clark Street in 1860 and another source had him in the city from 1859 – 1883. The image is in excellent minus condition with great tones and contrast and a hint of wear with a small spot or two. This is an intriguing photo in its own right but a curious connection to a daguerreian studio fire adds even more interest!
